Company-Wide Recycling Program Starts

Eden Stone Company and Valders Stone and Marble, Inc. have recently begun a company-
wide recycling program aimed at reducing the amount of waste being taken to area
landfills, maximizing the re-use of waste products generated in our facilities, and minimizing disposal costs. Our “single stream” recycling program allows us to place all recyclable items into one receptical while placing all non-recyclable material into another. This greatly simplifies the task of waste disposal. Recyclable items include aluminum, glass, plastic, paper, and cardboard. Items such as paper plates, napkins, and cups contaminated with food residue, and material contaminated with oil are not recyclable.

The employees of Eden Stone/Valders Stone and Marble have enthusiastically embraced
the program. Constant vigilance and inspection by committed employees keep the
recycling process running smoothly.

Everybody supports recycling and wants to do it because “it’s the right thing to do.”
But there is always the nagging economic side of the issue. If it costs too much to recycle, nobody will do it. However, the cost of waste disposal throughout the company has actually undergone a slight decrease, so even our accountants are smiling!

As landfill space becomes more and more scarce, everyone at work and at home
needs to be conscious of where their waste material is going. Here at Eden Stone/Valders Stone and Marble, we are doing our best to minimize waste, recycle what we can, and keep the environment healthy.

What is andquot;Genuine Stoneandquot;?

Genuine Stone branding is part of the new initiative brought forth by the Natural Stone Council (NSC) to help clearly discern the difference between natural stone and manufactured materials. For quite some time, the word “stone” has been used in the marketing of simulated products that are not natural stone. Some common examples are: cast stone, simulated stone, synthetic stone, manufactured stone, or faux stone.

The Genuine Stone® heading and logo will be in use by all natural stone companies in the world who are members of the NSC. Now, clients and designers alike will be able to instantly identify natural stone products. The implementation of this new branding campaign will help streamline the design process by making material selection process much more efficient. By choosing a product that is associated with the Genuine Stone logo, you can rest assured that you are working with natural stone.

Natural stone has been proven to be one of civilization’s most sustainable building materials. The appropriate application of natural stone, based upon the performance characteristics of the stone, will produce unsurpassed durability and will provide a lifetime of service. The unique attributes of various natural stone types allow it to be used in a multitude of applications while enhancing the beauty and value of any project.

Natural stone is recyclable, inert, does not emit VOC’s or off gassing, contain no additives that could potentially harm human life or the environment.

For your next project, make sure to consider products displaying the Genuine Stone® logo.

OC Tanner Flagship Store Wins Tucker Design Award

Valders Stone and Marble, a division of Eden Stone, is pleased to announce that one of their recently completed projects has been honored and is to receive the prestigious Tucker Design Award. The Building Stone Institute has recognized the OC Tanner Flagship store as one of this year’s recipients. This biennial accolade is given to building or landscape projects in the nation that have integrated natural stone into their design.

Valders Stone and Marble provided nearly 600,000 pounds of material for this ornate restoration. This is much more than what was originally projected to be a small “match” job to part of a 100 year old building. The architect found Valders Buff limestone to be a perfect match to the existing structure. The design team quickly discovered the versatility of Valders Stone, as well as the capability of their stone to perform in a multitude of applications.

This led to the Buff material being fabricated into large monolithic panels that now comprise the East elevation of the building envelope. The resulting laser engraved panels represent the largest project of its kind in the entire world.

To maintain the uniformity and continuity of the project, Valders Buff limestone was chosen for exterior paving, large pillar capitals, wall copings, piers, curbing, and other elements. These different facets, once assembled together, have created an architectural gem in the center of downtown Salt Lake City.

As the building began to take shape on the outside, there were a great number of decisions to be made on the inside. The architect enjoyed working with Valders Stone and Marble, and they knew that Valders Dovewhite limestone would be ideal for the project’s intricate interior detail. Valders Dovewhite was used for interior stone tile, an artistic, circular tile inlay, and for the building’s center spiral staircase. The free standing steel staircase is part of the store’s focal point. Comprised of a unique riser and tread design, this element gives the illusion of a free flowing, seamless piece of art. It was the objective of the architect to have the staircase to appear to be carved out of a singular piece of stone and extend from the first to third floors.

Valders Stone and Marble, Inc. produces dimensional cut limestone building and hardscape materials for many prominent institutional, residential and commercial projects throughout North America and internationally. Valders Stone is honored to have provided the cut stone and quality workmanship which contributed to the O.C. Tanner store project receiving the prestigious Tucker Award.
